You often see the grimm reaper on warm-toned backgrounds and this is a nice change of pace. It retains its eerie disposition and ads some new and original elements to its dark concept with the crystals embedded in the mound behind him. With a little imagination those crystals could be interpreted as souls trapped by deaths grasp.

good sides:
The work has a nice choice of the colors. Also the work has a spooky feel recognized the world over. Work on the halo, head and upper part of body is great, with good work on the scythe.

problems:
Needs more details on the crystals and part of the cloak, it should fall freely in all sections. Scythe doesn't look useful for a fight.

Very much love the concept and design, the pallet is subtle and appropriate for a hallows theme. I enjoy the design of the sky, Similar to "starry night" by van Gogh. I do wish they did not add the outline pixels around the moon. Everything else is so well Anti Aliased.

good sides:
The work has a fun atmosphere which is very important for PA. Characters with the perspective trail and down part of the tree with its roots and face are great. The Moon together with the face of the tree have a nice contrast and keep balance in the work.

problems:
Needs shadow from the tree, also shadows from characters aren’t correct. Needs more reflected light over all objects, characters and tree. Would be good to work with AA in some parts, as example the moon looks very jagged. Inside the mouth of the tree has good use of dithering, but the sky also needs more dithering.

good sides:
Rider is a great idea. Red scheme of the colors, holds a sensation for blood and fear. Horse fits well with the background. Red moon and mill are a nice touch.

problems:
Sky with 2 colors with such a big contrast without AA isn’t the best. The robe needs volume, it looks very flat and is very simple and has some problems with proportion of the figure toward the horse. Big black part in the background between sky and skulls is very empty.

This Challenge had an exceptionally high standard of entries and it was a very difficult task for the judges. I felt pretty much all entries deserved to win a place, so in the next weeks and months, I will re visit this challenge and choose works to display as DD features. I have a challenge for you, make me something really, really spooky, it does not need to be about Halloween, just spooky stuff. You will lose points for grinning pumpkins, so no pumpkins please.
