Doll Gallery Winners for the 'Year of the Rat' Competition.

I have added some comments from the judges under the winners in italics in order that contestants can gain from the experience and readers may gain a greater perspective on the choices.

Prizes

First Prize is $dA100 deviant dollars

Second Prize is $dA50 deviant dollars

Third Prize is $dA25 deviant dollars

First Place

This entry is very serene and peaceful. The colors give the impression of royalty. Perhaps the best feature of this entry is the rats themselves. Not only are they quite life-like, they're full of that playful personality that rats are known for.

The whole composition of this elegant and regal piece leaves me looking over and over at it. I was amazed. The doting and curious handmaidens represented in the rats and the rich, beautiful, and material princess flourishing from their tending to her... this doll speaks so highly about this sign without saying a word.

~

Beautiful and simplistic. The fact that it lacks a background draws me more to the actual doll and rats, rather than a melding and mixing of a bunch of things that my eyes would fail to focus on. The rats make an obvious statement as part of the image, rather than as ' props'

Second Place

*PackagedBliss

........ crisp, clean shading and the fact that it all seems complete. The elements all work together, the colors compliment each other, and all the parts flow into each other.

This entry is overflowing with detail. Everything is very crisp and clean. Every element highlights the contests theme perfectly. The background elements are fanciful, and give one the impression that the doll is stepping straight in from an asian hillside.

Lovely piece, great shading, and style. Many chinese image references, Clothing, fans, lanterns, etc. The rat holding a coin makes a perfect accent but I would have liked to see the rat be more prominent.

Third Place

~Pyrochan-dolls

She is fierce, intense, and mysterious. The artist did their homework with this one. It feels very much like a proper representation of the dangerous side of this sign. The attributes to the sign are subtle but affective and the style of the art is fluid and slick with this doll.

The pose and stylish clothing give this entry a decidedly dramatic flair. All the colors and shades blend together seamlessly. The year-of-the-rat elements are subtle and inspired.

~

........ not only is it a stunning creation, well-shaded with vibrant colors and an awesome design, but it also epitomizes all the meaning behind 'year of the rat', and the Chinese elements of this zodiac competition. The whole thing seems well-planned, full of creative thinking.

Congratulations to the winners and my deepest thanks to the judges for their time, their comments about the entries and the difficult task of selecting the winners from a very strong field of entries.

And thanks to Ann and the judges for running. I didn't get chance to enter this one but it's always nice to see the community participating in stuff like this and to see such lovely work. ^__^

Oh! I'm really embarrassed now, and have put myself in a "told you so situation" I kept telling Monica that her entry or Pyro's would probably get first.

Be embarrassed....it was a clear win on points.

Now I am in a sad situation....naturally I wanted to give the winner a DD feature but you were given a DD feature from another Gallery Director at the end of last month. We are not permitted to feature an artist more often than once in a three month period....so I will need to select the the second place winner for the feature and keep your work as a feature for the future. I am really sorry about that and was being so careful not to feature potential winners until the results came in.

Oh gosh no! Don't be sorry at all. I'm happy my tutorial got a DD too. It got a ton of positive response and I was able to help people. I'm really glad that Monica could get it too ^^
